Productivity is the name of the game if you are looking to take charge of your life. While I do not know anyone who is always perfectly productive, there are ways to be better at it.
First, you need to understand that being productive does not mean being busy.
It is doing small tasks daily that are in alignment with your goals and values.
It is a habit that will leave you feeling a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day.
Only you know what your goals are, but your actions reflect your true values regardless of what you tell yourself that your values are.
So, if your goals are of value to you; if they mean anything at all to you, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it.
And that starts with becoming aware of your habit of Procrastination and then taking the right actions to instead be productive.
Here are 5 Tips for Increasing your Productivity to be in alignment with your goals.
1. Have a Set Goal
Anyone can be productive but not without a goal.
You are productive when your goal is to stay fit, and you get up and try to eat well and stay active.
Similarly, you are productive when your goal is to deep clean the house today, you put together a list of all that needs to get done and you start checking chores off.
It is not when you are doing basic survival tasks like eating, taking a shower, feeding your pets, etc.
Those are basic actions that are not in alignment with any goal.
Being productive is taking specific actions that lead you to something you want or need.
So, to be productive, you need to have a goal.
2. Plan no more than 3 to 5 Main Tasks for Each Day
A never-ending to-do list is often the reason for burnout.
It is also discouraging to get started when you see the lengthy list of things you need to do.
It is less overwhelming to set just 3 to 5 tasks to work on at a time.
Then complete another 3 to 5 daily/ weekly until you accomplish your goal.
In this way, you will create a habit of working on towards your goal consistently.
At first, doing the things we want requires a lot of conscious effort but by being consistent, it will require a lot less energy to keep moving towards your goal.
3. Start with the Most Important task
The most important task can often feel like the most daunting thing to get started with.
So, you put it off until your energy is depleted. And that turns into what sounds like the perfect excuse to postpone it to another day. And on that new day, you will do the same as you did last time, and the cycle continues until you begin to feel guilty, or that your goal isn’t being reached. and you give up.
But 100% of the time, if you start with the most important task, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and the confidence to keep going. Even if that is the only thing you get done for the day.
4. Rest Well
Usually, people think being serious about a goal means to sacrifice sleep.
‘To burn the midnight oil’ or ‘To Burn the candle at both ends’.
This is incorrect.
Lack of sleep leads to low energy, inability to think straight and burnout.
Think of your body like a phone.
If you use it all day, you will need to charge it to maintain its battery life. When the battery goes below a certain percentage, the lights become dull, allowing you to use it still but its ability to perform is not the same. And even when you are not actively using it, but it is turned on, the battery life decreases.
In the same way, sleeping is your body’s way of recharging.
If you do not sleep enough, your ability to perform at your best will be poor. You might still be able to function, but you will not be putting in your best work.
And if you plan to achieve your goal, you need to show up as your best self.
Sleep expert, Arianna Huffington authored a book called The Sleep Revolution that speaks in-depth on this topic and the role sleep plays in transforming your life.
Lewis Homes on YouTube also interviewed her where she talks about the connection between sleep and success.

5. Fuel your Body with the Right Foods
Whether you choose to eat a vegan diet, a Mediterranean diet, a vegetarian diet, etc., you must be fueling your body with the right foods for you.
You might ask how this is related to productivity.
Well, calories equal energy and to get calories, you must consume food. The more energy you need, the more you should be eating but you want to be eating the right food.
Because while calories may be fuel, you cannot just feed your body whatever you find.
When you drive a car, you do not just go to the gas station and fuel it with any kind of gas. You buy premium gas if it is premium gas that your car runs best on.
Foods that are bad for you will give you a burst of energy that is short lived, leaving you extremely tired in the end. While healthy foods provide a slow and steady burn to keep you going for a long time with minimum strain on your body.
So, be sure to supply your body with the right foods, which are nutritious and will help you perform at your absolute best.
Your energy levels will directly impact your level of productivity.
In conclusion, my 5 tips for increasing your productivity are:
- Have a main goal
- Plan no more than 3- 5 main tasks for the day
- Start with the most important task
- Rest well
- Fuel your body with the right foods.
You now have 5 tools that you can use to up your productivity game, snap out of procrastination, and show up as your best self.
