Braces consultation is usually free and takes only about 20 minutes to half an hour. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Instead, I suggest you stay calm and try to listen carefully to what the orthodontist is saying and most of all, pay attention to his/her attitude towards helping you get your teeth fixed.

First, you need to schedule the consultation. Most Orthodontic offices are busy and work on schedules. Even though it may not seem like it when you get there, they are usually busy and do not take walk-ins.

Personally, I paid everything out of pocket. So, the calls I made were mostly about the price rather than the timeframe in which I would like to get my teeth fixed. Setting a time frame isn’t realistic since the time your teeth requires to be fixed would depend on its condition.

I read online reviews and tried my best to call a few places before I even set up the consultation. This helped me a lot in choosing the Office I wish to go with.

When you find a place and schedule your consultation, the next thing to do is prepare your teeth for braces because chances are, you might love the orthodontist attitude and decide to get the braces right away.

1-

At the consultation, you will first be required to fill out a few forms and agree to their terms and conditions before getting started. In some cases, this step can be completed online before the day of the consultation to speed up the process on the day of your appointment.

2-

Once the forms are signed, the next step will be for an assistant to take an X-ray of your mouth. This will allow the Orthodontist to have a proper view of your entire mouth and the position of each tooth.

3-

Then, they’ll take photos of your smile from different angles to have an external view of your current smile. This helps the orthodontist to have a clear view of your smile esthetics and the soft tissue patterns in your mouth to determine what techniques he/she needs to perform to give you your best smile.

4-

Finally, the orthodontist will carefully examine your teeth and your bite. He/ She will discuss the straightening options available to you, how long it will take them to fix your teeth and what retainers you will receive at the end of your treatment. Further, he/she will answer any questions you might have. If you decide to get your smile corrected by them, and wish to start right away, you will need to make the down payment before the treatment begins. Otherwise, you can set up another appointment to start the treatment.

Most of you will be happy to know that there will be no needle involved in any of this.

Things to look out for at your Braces consultation

Are they giving you options?

A good orthodontist would have a few options available on how he can fix your smile. Even better, they should be telling you an option that will work in your favor rather than stress you out.

My problem was/ still is an underbite and crooked front teeth. I was worried sick that I might need surgery because I couldn’t afford it.  Also, I’ve never gone into operation and have a deep fear of it. However, when I went in for the consultation, my Ortho quickly eliminated my fear when he went on to saying first he will try to push back my bottom jaw with rubber bands, otherwise, he will need to remove teeth and if that still doesn’t work, then I will need surgery.

I’ve been working with the first option now for 2 months and my bite has been corrected significantly. Safe to say, I won’t need to have teeth removed or worse, jaw surgery.

Answering your questions in your interest

Too often, we see professionals that are more for themselves than for you. They rather fatten their pockets than build trust with their customers by sincerely solving your problems. Therefore, paying attention to the orthodontist attitude towards helping you is important.

Braces are expensive especially if you are paying out of pocket. You don’t want to pay for something that you are not comfortable with or have doubts about. In this case, you should attend multiple consultations until you find the one that will give you what is best for you.

However, at some point, if you are hearing the same thing at more than 3-5 orthodontic office, then I’d say think about it. Weigh the pros and cons of what they are saying and see if you can come to terms with any of the available options. Maybe, it wouldn’t be as bad as you think.

Overall, your Braces Consultation should be about finding an Orthodontist you are comfortable with, who will get the job done at a price you can afford.
