What is it Genuinely like to Eat a Healthy Diet?
Making the switch to healthy eating is a decision you make mostly when
- You are sick and your doctor start insisting on it
- You suddenly begin suffering from food allergies
- You are looking to lose weight
- You are being influenced by your favorite online guru
But what about making the switch because it is the right thing to do?
Because you want to save yourself a trip to the doctor?
Or simply because you want to improve your quality of life?
So that you can show up as your best self, for your family, or yourself?
Those are the more important reasons to consider making the switch to healthy eating.
But first, I will tell you what it is genuinely like to eat healthily then you can decide if making the switch to healthy eating is right for you.
In the year 2015, I made my move to the United States of America. I knew nothing about moving to a new place and was naïve to the fact that my entire life is about to change, not just my location.
I grew up eating 3 fresh meals a day. That is 3 varied meals, cooked at home with fresh ingredients, every day, 7 days a week.
I spent 18 years eating like this. Whatever was leftover, would be shared with neighbors and friends though naturally, we were able to average the measurements of food that would be enough for the household.
Not for a tiny second did it cross my mind that people, who have the luxury of food available to them, do not all eat like this.
I moved here and started off living with an extended family.
Of course, I attempted to continue my habit of cooking and eating fresh foods all my meals.
But the house was not mine, so the house rules were not mine either.
A relative made it clear to me that in this house they do not cook every day. We must eat leftovers for the next 2 to 3 days.
That is the very moment that I believe my health went downhill.
I then began suffering from Acne, food allergies, heat rashes, and excess fat in places I do not want them.
I blame an unhealthy diet for those reactions because no one in my family sufferers from acne, I have eaten varied food for 18 years without any problem, I grew up on an island where it is hot all year long, and I now have no control over my daily meals, so I am eating high caloric food for days on end without the activity to back it up. Not to mention the winter holiday meals that left tons of leftovers.
Nevertheless, it is an experience that paid off.
It is what inspired me to create this blog.
However, I know that there are some sides to eating healthily that you may not be willing to keep up with.
To help you, I will go over the Pros and Cons of making the switch to Healthy Eating.
Cons of Eating a Healthy Diet
Meal- planning
I find meal-planning to be a bit tedious.
I love going through recipe books or any book, but I find picking out a recipe that is going to be filling, easy to make, and without any foreign ingredient to be a hard find.
However, meal-planning is only necessary at the beginning of your journey.
Eventually, you will have quite a handful of good recipes at your disposal that you can play around with.
When you have the time, you can throw in a new recipe just to switch things up and add a new recipe to your favorites list.
Two extra Tasks
Eating a healthy diet requires lots of home-cooking.
It is the most effective way to ensure that you are eating a varied diet as often as possible without spending a ton of money.
This means you are cooking at least 1 meal at home every day which I have learned is uncommon for many people.
Not to mention the dishes.
Your next additional task will be to wash a ton of dishes because somehow one meal uses up 4 pots and a pan plus 11 spoons.
On the bright side, you will be building a new skill. That is, learning to be a better home-cook.
As for the dishes, you can delegate it to a family member or use the activity as a chance to practice mindfulness.
So have fun with it. It is not half bad.
Time- consuming
If you are needing to cook your food, time will be a requirement.
Depending on your lifestyle, you may either need to find quick and easy recipes or recipes that you can make ahead of time.
But in doing this, you will also be working on a new skill: Time- management.
If you are serious about healthy eating, then you will find the time to do what it takes to get you the results you desire.

Pros of Eating a Healthy Diet
Fewer trips to the hospital
There is no doubt that healing begins in the kitchen.
Experts advise time and time again on the importance of eating a healthy diet.
When you go to the hospital for any ailment, the Doctor questions your current diet and suggests change as needed.
When you are sick with the flu, all variations of soups are being summoned.
Some people take ginger shots to help beat cancer.
When you are experiencing constipation, a diet of high fiber is the suggested solution.
These are just random common examples of the connection between your diet and your health.
So yes, a healthy diet can and will reduce your trips to the hospital.
More energy at your disposal
A varied selection of healthy food choices not only makes you feel better psychologically but it makes you feel better literally.
With a good consumption of complex carbs, you have the energy at your disposal to suddenly think about your goals, work on them, and even come up with new goals.
Energy is the first requirement for getting anything done.
Controlled weight gain or weight loss
Did you know that rapid weight loss is just as bad as rapid weight gain?
A person should not be losing more than a pound or two per month.
With a healthy diet, you can not only control your weight gain, but you can also begin to naturally shed off the excess fat without the need for a special diet or even exercise.
A boost of confidence
A healthy diet is a nutritious diet.
That means, your body is being fueled with all the nutrients needed to
- Reverse hair loss
- Reduce Acne inflammation
- Bring out the glow in your skin
- Heal brittle nails
A better presentation in appearance helps to boost confidence for most people, if not everyone.
I know it does for me.
On the days that I am feeling blue, a little outer care is what makes me feel better, even if temporarily.
But with a healthy diet, an improved appearance is long term.
Reduction in sugary cravings
The more you eat healthy, making sure that you are full, the less room there will be for sugary cravings.
Most times we crave sugar when our body is low on energy.
It is signaling you that it needs a quick energy boost which only leaves you feeling drained in the long run.
Sugar gives a quick release of energy that gets used up in a short time while a healthy diet filled with complex carbs provides the body with a slow and steady release of energy.
Lower spending on food
Healthy eating is not anywhere near as expensive as it sounds.
Most ingredients are cheap and can be bought in bulk, such as rice beans, tortilla, etc., and it lasts a long time.
Vegetables and fruits are inexpensive when you are buying what you need only.
This calls for making a list.
A detailed or scribbled list of meal ideas for the week is useful to eliminate the chances of buying things you do not need or things you might already have.
In conclusion, there are more benefits than troubles when it comes to eating a healthy diet.
You can choose to live a quality life with the mild problem of washing some extra dishes or you can choose to continue with frequent hospital trips because maybe you like the smell of hospitals?
